Dextran Sulfate Sodium
Induced Colitis Model

Dextran Sulfate Sodium (DSS) is a sulfated polysaccharide with anticoagulant properties to induce colitis.

It is believed that DSS is directly toxic to gut epithelial cells of the basal crypts and thus harm the integrity of the mucosal barrier.

The clinical observation of DSS treated animals are very similar to human IBD pathologies.
